In medicine, the cutting of a lobe. The term
usually refers to the operation of frontal
lobotomy (or leucotomy), where the frontal
lobes are disconnected from the rest of the
brain by cutting the white matter that joins
them. This may alleviate the condition of
patients with severe depression, anxiety
states, or obsessive-compulsive disorders,
but it is now rarely performed, and only on
patients who have proved resistant to all
other forms of treatment. See also
psychosurgery. It was pioneered by A E Moniz
(1874-1955), who shared the 1949 Nobel Prize
for Medicine for his work in brain surgery.
